The section of Aquatic Biology is part of the Department of Biology of the faculty of Natural Sciences. The section has over 25 years of experience in the use of wetlands for the mitigation of water pollution. Extensive research has also been done in the removal and recovery of nutrients from wastewater.

Syntea has designed or built more than 1500 plants with this technology, and conducts R&I projects in order to improve discharge levels (total nitrogen and pathogen removal) and adapt the technology to industrial effluents or combined sewer overflow.
