Phosphorus recovery

Natural and industrial bioproducts and engineered nano-materials (e.g. calcite, coated materials CHT/cellulose adsorbents) with high surface area and sorption capacities will enhance the nutrient recovery of the final effluent, especially P, and will facilitate higher development of aerobic/facultative/anaerobic biomass than other filtering materials.

To lead phosphorus recovery, treated water will go through a bed of this material, before undergoing tertiary treatments. The contact of water and the absorption material accumulate P in the solid matrix, resulting in a low-P content effluent.

The material characteristics including size, morphology, granulometry, adsorption capacity, hydraulic performance, etc, will be tested at mesocosms scale (natural environmental). Once the nutrient retention capacity is determined, enough volumes will be produced to be tested and validated at field scale.
